I very much agree — it’s great that disabled soldiers are being accommodated; what’s disturbing I think is the changing expectations about such injuries. The option to return is great I guess for the soldier who really 100% wants to get back to the fighting. But I suspect that a lot of people who suffer such injuries have less than zero desire to return to combat. Now, as “tough” amputee soldiers return to fight, those who would prefer not to go back will face pressure to do so. And those who would have been seen as heroes for their injuries will now be seen as a little cowardly next to their returning comrades. And given military culture, you can be sure that the psychological pressure to return and support the others in the unit will be extraordinarily strong.

…and while I welcome the integration of soldiers with disabilities into the active armed forces, I can’t help but think this is a bad idea.
