The Good News

SchwanthalerB_1.jpg

A couple of good things happened yesterday.  First, through the glory of Ebay I received my small marble bust of Ludwig Schwanthaler (picked up in lieu of this beautiful but wicked thing).

Also Friday, I successfully defended my dissertation.  This turned out to be a really interesting and pleasant experience.  After a bit of proofreading and some very minor changes, I should be able to deposit the diss sometime next month.

I had to look up Ludwig Schwanthaler; I didn’t know who he was.  Congrats on the ebay win (and the successful defense, natch).

    Congratulations on the dissertation!

Thanks Al & Dave.  I should perhaps note with respect to Mr. Schwanthaler that I too had no idea who he was until I saw that I could pick up a nineteenth century marble bust of the poor fellow for $2.25 on Ebay.  Crazy King Ludwig’s favorite sculptor, and the decorator of what might be the world’s most pure hall of heads fame, I felt that the least I could do for Mr. Schwanthaler was to stick him in a nook somewhere in my office or home.  I hope he appreciates the gesture.

Speaking of which, thanks again to y’all for your kind congratulations.

Congrats on the defense, BFD! That’s great! Now all you have to do is find a job. Ah, there’s the rub.

Speaking of which, Jen and I are moving on to Delaware. She and I both have jobs at UDel in Newark. She’s going to be running their Rare Book Bibliographic unit and I will be working as an Archivist in their Special Collections department. We move out of St. Louis on Jan 4. ANd I get to meet Gephardt (hopefully) this coming Friday. I’ll send you a pic.

Congratulations again! That’s really great news.

Hey Tom, congrats on the move to Delaware!  Sounds like a fantastic opportunity, though I’m sad to see you fleeing the vicinity (although since I never made it out to St. Louis, I can’t really scold you too soundly, I suppose).  But you’ll be in visiting distance from DC anyhow, yes?  Definitely let me know if you’ll be in CU or Chicago before you leave, in case we can arrange a tearful ceremonial send-off involving some cheap rum and good beer.

Big congrats on the defense! Surely it was those weeks spent in repose in the Northwoods that spurred you on, no? :)

FamousP, it’s sad that I’m corresponding with you through blog comments. Congrats to you two as well. There might be big changes afoot here, too, as E. just had an interview for a job in Denver.
